OFIVE : Pour ceux qui te découvrent, peux-tu nous résumer ton parcours dans les grandes lignes ? // For those who discover you, can you summarize your career in broad terms ?
Shay Lia : Je suis née en France et à l’âge de 5 ans, j’ai déménagé au Djibouti, en Afrique de l’Est. Quand j’ai eu mon bac, j’avais le choix de poursuivre mes études à Paris ou Montréal et j’ai choisi Montréal. Là-bas, j’ai rapidement rencontré la communauté Hip Hop, R&B et quelques beatmakers dont Kaytranada à une soirée de Jazzy Jeff. On s’est ajouté sur Facebook où il a pu voir une vidéo de moi en train de chanter, il s’appelait Kaytradamus à l’époque et faisait beaucoup de remixes mais pas vraiment de musique originale. Il m’a demandé si je composais, j’y ai vu une belle opportunité et depuis, on collabore très régulièrement. Tout au long de mes études, je faisais de la musique sans manager avec l’aide de mes potes mais je savais que je voulais en faire mon métier. Après mes études, je me suis lancée en indépendant, en sortant uniquement des singles pour tester le public. J’ai fait une mini tournée en Europe puis on a sorti l’EP. // I was born in France and at the age of 5, I moved to Djibouti, East Africa. When I graduated from high school, I had the choice of studying in Paris or Montreal and I chose Montreal. There, I quickly met the Hip Hop and R&B community as well as some beatmakers including Kaytranada at a Jazzy Jeff party. We added ourselves on Facebook so he could see a video of me singing, his name was Kaytradamus at the time and he was a lot into remixes but not really into original songs. He asked me if I was composing, I saw a great opportunity and since then, we have been collaborating very regularly. Throughout my studies, I was doing music without a manager but with the help of my friends, but I knew I wanted music to be my career. After my studies, I went independent, releasing only singles to test the audience. I did a mini tour in Europe and then we released the EP.
OFIVE : Comment définirais-tu ton EP « Dangerous » en seulement 3 mots ? // How would you define your « Dangerous » EP in only 3 words ?
Shay Lia : Colorful/Warm/Emotional
OFIVE : Buddy nous le décrivait comme un grand perfectionniste, quel est ton point de vue sur Kaytranada et sa façon de travailler ? // Buddy described him as a great perfectionist, what is your point of view on Kaytranada’s way of working ?
Shay Lia : Il ne cherche pas forcément la perfection, il aime laisser certaines choses brutes mais c’est quelqu’un qui a vraiment besoin d’aller au bout de sa vision. C’est un vrai artiste. // He doesn’t necessarily seek perfection, he likes to leave certain things raw but he is someone who really needs to go to the end of his vision. He’s a real artist.
OFIVE : Quels artistes et albums ont marqué ton adolescence ? // Which artists and albums marked your teenage years ?
Shay Lia : Mon premier souvenir musical, j’en parle souvent mais ça reste Janet Jackson et son morceau « Together again ». Très tôt, j’ai écouté du Sade, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder,Amy Winehouse, les Destiny’s Child. // My first musical memory, I often talk about it but it’s still Janet Jackson and her song « Together again ». Very early on, I listened to Sade, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse, the Destiny’s Child.
OFIVE : Après Kaytra, Stwo ou encore Sango, avec quels producteurs aimerais-tu travailler ? // After Kaytra, Stwo or Sango, which producers would you like to work with ?
Shay Lia : Je suis actuellement en train de commencer à travailler avec eux, j’ai de la chance ! Récemment, je suis partie à Los Angeles, j’ai enregistré pas mal de morceaux en studio alors qu’avant, j’avais l’habitude de bosser sur ce qu’on m’envoyait par mail. Sans dévoiler les noms pour garder la surprise, j’ai rencontré la famille de producteurs et musiciens qui bossent avec Anderson .Paak. On a bossé dans le studio de Raphael Saadiq, des trucs bien funky ! // I’m currently starting to work with them, I’m lucky ! Recently, I went to Los Angeles, I recorded a lot of songs from scratches in the studio whereas before, I used to work on what was sent to me by email. Without revealing the names to keep the surprise, I met the family of producers and musicians who work with Anderson .Paak. We worked in Raphael Saadiq’s studio, some pretty funky stuff !
OFIVE : Quels sont les artistes francophones que tu aimes écouter ? // Which Francophone artists do you like to listen to ?
Shay Lia : J’écoute surtout des classiques. Je suis obsédée par Claude Nougaro qui s’inspirait aussi de la musique brésilienne que j’adore. Je n’écoute pas forcément la scène française actuelle de mon plein grès mais si on me passe du 13 Block je vais kiffer. Sinon j’écoutais Amel Bent quand j’avais 14 ans et que son premier album était pas mal du tout ! // I listen mostly to classics. I am obsessed with Claude Nougaro who was also inspired by Brazilian music, which I love. I don’t necessarily listen to the current French scene on my own, but if someone plays 13 Block I’ll love it. Otherwise I was listening to Amel Bent when I was 14 and her first album was not bad at all !
OFIVE : Au niveau de l’industrie musicale, quelles différences ressens-tu entre la France et le Canada ? // In terms of the music industry, what differences do you feel between France and Canada ?
Shay Lia : Disons que les artistes indépendants anglophones sont obligés d’aller sur Toronto pour avoir des deals avec Apple ou Spotify par exemple. J’ai l’impression que c’est différent ici. En revanche, côté presse et visibilité, c’est plus facile à Montréal alors qu’ici, il faut être super connu pour qu’on parle de toi. Je ne retrouve pas le marché intermédiaire qu’il peut y avoir au Canada. Même si la France est obsédée par les américains, ça reste compliqué pour qu’on parle d’artistes de ma catégorie dans les médias. // Let’s say that English-speaking independent artists are forced to go to Toronto to get deals with Apple or Spotify for example. I feel like it’s different here. On the other hand, in terms of press and visibility, it’s easier in Montreal, whereas here, you have to be very famous to get people to talk about you. I can’t find the intermediate market that there may be in Canada. Even if France is obsessed with Americans, it’s still complicated for media to talk about artists of my category.
OFIVE : Shay Lia pourrait-elle faire un feat avec Shay ? // What about a Shay Lia x Shay song ?
Shay Lia : Elle fait les choses avec beaucoup d’esthétisme, c’est assez carré donc pourquoi pas, je peux l’imaginer sauf que je ne suis vraiment pas fan du franglais dans les chansons, c’est souvent forcé et peu naturel. Si elle chante en anglais, il faut que son accent soit irréprochable (comme le mien). // She does things with a lot of aestheticism, it’s quite professional so why not, I can imagine it, except that I’m really not a fan of the Frenglish in the songs, it’s often forced and unnatural. If she sings in English, her accent must be perfect (like mine).
OFIVE : As-tu déjà été « jalouse » de l’instru d’un autre artiste en te disant : « j’aurais aimé que cette prod soit pour moi » ? // Have you ever been « jealous » of another artist’s instrumental by saying to yourself : « I wish this production was for me » ?
Shay Lia : Récemment, ça m’a fait ça avec quelques morceaux de Kali Uchis et « Get you » de Daniel Caesar. // Recently, this happened with few Kali Uchis songs and « Get You » by Daniel Caesar.
OFIVE : Y’a-t-il une tendance musicale que tu ne supportes plus ? // Is there a musical trend you can’t stand anymore ?
Shay Lia : Je commence à décrocher un peu de la trap. Je n’en écoute pas pour le plaisir ni pour faire le ménage par exemple. J’ai été élevée à la Soul donc j’ai besoin de choses pointues et envoûtantes, de pépites musicales qui m’embarquent… // I’m starting to get a little off the trap music. I don’t listen to it for pleasure or to clean my house for example. I was raised in Soul so I need sharp and enchanting things, musical nuggets that embark me…
OFIVE : Et au niveau des tendances vestimentaires ? // What about the fashion trends ?
Shay Lia : Déjà niveau maquillage, les sourcils en vague c’est pas possible ! J’en ai aussi un peu marre des filles d’Instagram qui font les mêmes poses dans le même genre de robes chaque jour. Il y en a beaucoup trop et ça tourne en rond, ça manque de diversité, c’est creux, tout se ressemble. // In terms of make-up, wave eyebrows are not possible ! I’m also a little fed up with the Instagram girls doing the same poses in the same kind of dresses every day. There are too many of them and it goes in circles, it lacks diversity, it’s hollow, everything looks the same.
OFIVE : Miguel ou Frank Ocean ? // Miguel or Frank Ocean ?
Shay Lia : J’ai eu la chance de rencontrer Miguel et il a une voix incroyable, il s’inspire beaucoup de Marvin Gaye mais je choisis Frank Ocean pour ses paroles et la qualité de ses mélodies. Il a de réelles subtilités dans sa façon d’écrire, je découvre de nouvelles choses à chaque fois dans ses paroles et la façon plus ou moins évidente de composer, les vibes. Je vais re-télécharger Channel Orange d’ailleurs ! // I had the chance to meet Miguel and he has an incredible voice, he is very inspired by Marvin Gaye but I choose Frank Ocean for his lyrics and the quality of his melodies. He has real subtleties in the way he writes, I discover new things every time in his words and the more or less obvious way of composing, the vibes. I’m going to download Channel Orange again by the way !
OFIVE : Ton meilleur souvenir improbable avec une célébrité ? // Your best improbable memory with a celebrity ?
Shay Lia : C’était à Coachella. J’étais là avec Kaytranada et mon équipe, on a été invités à une « pool party » avec pas mal de « nouveaux » artistes type Aminé, Denzel Curry… Il faisait super chaud, j’étais en combinaison et je dégoulinais quand j’ai aperçu un grand chapeau arriver au loin. C’était Erykah Badu ! J’avais payé 150$ pour la voir en concert l’année dernière et là, elle se retrouve face à moi ! Elle était là pour un Dj Set et après sa performance, elle est allée saluer Kaytranada. Je ne savais pas si je devais rester dans mon coin et attendre une prochaine occasion ou courir pour m’incruster dans la conversation. J’ai choisi la deuxième option et elle a été adorable. Elle a même essuyé le rouge à lèvres qui avait coulé pendant que je courrais, comme une tantine ! // It happened at Coachella. I was there with Kaytranada and my team, we were invited to a « pool party » with a lot of « new » artists like Aminé, Denzel Curry… The weather was super hot, I was in a suit and dripping when I saw a big hat coming from far away. It was Erykah Badu! I paid $150 to see her in concert last year and she was right in front of me now ! She was there for a DJ Set and after her performance, she went to greet Kaytranada. I didn’t know if I should stay in my corner and wait for another opportunity later or run to get into the conversation. I chose the second option and she was lovely. She even wiped off the lipstick that had run off while I was running, like an auntie !
