OFIVE : Ta première claque musicale ? // Your first musical slap?
Tengo John : Barbara, grâce à ma mère. C’est également ma mère qui m’a ensuite acheté les premiers albums de Gorillaz et j’ai écouté que ça pendant des années. // Barbara, thanks to my mother. It was also my mother who bought me the first Gorillaz albums and that’s all I listened to for years.
OFIVE : La première fois que tu t’es senti fier de toi ? // The first time you felt proud of yourself ?
Tengo John : Lors de mon concert à la Boule Noire, l’un des moments les plus importants de ma vie, et quand j’ai fait la Grünt. Sur ces deux dates, j’étais en compagnie de personnes que j’apprécie et estime énormément comme L’Étrange, Prince Waly, Sheldon, mon meilleur pote Mika, Sala, ma copine de l’époque, mes parents, Népal (Paix à son âme)… De vraies dates clés pour moi dans ma vie d’artiste. // At my concert at the Boule Noire, one of the most important moments of my life, and when I did the Grünt. On those two dates, I was with people that I appreciate and esteem enormously such as L’Etrange, Prince Waly, Sheldon, my best mate Mika, Sala, my girlfriend at the time, my parents, Nepal (Peace to his soul). Real key dates for me in my life as an artist.
OFIVE : Ta première scène ? // Your first stage ?
Tengo John : Je faisais la première partie de Prince Waly à Paris, au Petit Bain. C’était pour la release party de son EP « Junior ». C’était un vrai honneur car pour moi c’est l’un des meilleurs et plus authentiques rappeurs de France. // I was opening for Prince Waly in Paris, at Le Petit Bain. It was for the release party of his EP « Junior ». It was a real honor because for me he’s one of the best and most authentic rappers in France.
OFIVE : Ta première interview ? // Your first interview ?
Tengo John : C’était pour un ami en école de journalisme à l’époque mais c’est jamais sorti. // It was for a friend in journalism school at the time, but it never came out.
OFIVE : Tes premières vacances entre potes ? // Your first buddy vacation ?
Tengo John : C’était à Cannes, pour retrouver des potes que j’avais rencontré l’année précédente en passant mes vacances dans cette ville avec mes parents. On s’était fait des kifs de fous et pas mal de foot aussi. // It was in Cannes, to meet up with some friends I had met the year before when I spent my holidays there with my parents. We’d made some crazy stuff and a lot of football too.
OFIVE : Ta première dépense un peu folle ? // Your first crazy expense ?
Tengo John : Quand j’étais petit, je pouvais mettre des sommes folles pour des crampons ou des maillots de foot. Récemment, c’est une paire de Gucci achetée avec l’avance de « Multicolore », j’ai eu honte de mettre 650€ dedans mais j’adore cette paire et je l’ai bien rentabilisée. // When I was a kid, I could spend crazy amounts of money for cleats or soccer jerseys. Recently, I bought a pair of Gucci with the « Multicolor » advance, I was ashamed to put €650 in it but I love this pair and I made a good return on it.
OFIVE : Le premier livre qui t’as marqué ? // The first book that made an impression on you ?
Tengo John : « L’Odyssée » d’Homère quand j’étais enfant, ma grand-mère me le lisait. Je lisais également pas mal d’Harry Potter sur ses genoux. J’ai adoré le livre de littérature pour adolescents « Méto », un livre incroyable, mais aussi « L’Ecole des chats », un livre coréen de Jin-Kyeong Kim. Plus adulte, j’ai été marqué par l’essai de Sartre« L’existentialisme est un humanisme ». // Homer’s « Odyssey » when I was a child, my grandmother used to read it to me. I also read a lot of Harry Potter on her lap. I loved the teenage literature book « Meto », an incredible book, but also « The School of Cats », a Korean book by Jin-Kyeong Kim. As an adult, I was marked by Sartre’s essay « Existentialism is Humanism ».
OFIVE : Ton premier crush sur une célébrité ? // Your first crush on a celebrity ?
Tengo John : Quand j’étais vraiment petit c’était Emma Watson dans son rôle d’Hermione Granger. Plus tard, c’était Natalie Portman, Penélope Cruz et Monica Bellucci. // When I was really young it was Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. Later it was Natalie Portman, Penelope Cruz and Monica Bellucci.
OFIVE : Ton premier manga préféré ? // Your first favorite manga ?
Tengo John : Tout petit comme tout le monde c’était DBZ mais à partir de la sixième c’est Death Note qui m’a rendu fou. // When I was a kid like everyone else it was DBZ but from the sixth grade, it was Death Note that drove me crazy.
OFIVE : Le premier message de fan dont tu te souviens ? // The first fan message you remember ?
Tengo John : Big up à « Jamili le creps », un breton qui est là depuis le début, même à l’époque de Théo $kellington, il m’envoyait plein de messages et de force quand j’étais un sinistre inconnu. // Big up to « Jamili le creps », a Breton who’s been there since the beginning, even in the time of Theo $kellington, he sent me lots of messages and strength when I was a stranger.
OFIVE : Ta première grosse connerie ? // Your first big bullshit ?
Tengo John : Quand j’étais petit, je volais beaucoup dans un Franprix avec un pote d’enfance, dans les 1000€ en deux ans. Heureusement qu’ils ont changé de propriétaire. // When I was a kid, I stole a lot in a Franprix with a childhood friend, at least 1000€ in two years. It’s a good thing they changed owners.
OFIVE : Ton premier porte-bonheur ? // Your first lucky charm ?
Tengo John : Une tortue de jade offerte par mon parrain antiquaire. // A jade turtle courtesy of my antique dealer godfather.
OFIVE : Ton premier animal de compagnie ? // Your first pet ?
Tengo John : Ma mère a toujours eu deux chats à la maison. C’était interdit mais j’ai quand même ramené une tortue du Maroc aussi. J’étais à fond dans les reptiles donc j’ai aussi eu un caméléon. // My mother always had two cats at home. It was forbidden, but I still brought a turtle from Morocco too. I was into reptiles so I got a chameleon too.
OFIVE : Ta première rencontre marquante ? // Your first important meeting ?
Tengo John : Pierre, Diego et Tom, mes meilleurs amis d’enfance, ils se reconnaîtront. // Pierre, Diego and Tom, my best friends growing up, they’ll recognize each other.
