OFIVE : Quel est ton bilan après la sortie de cet album « Fleur froide » ? // What is your review after the release of this album « Fleur froide » ?
Tayc : Il est très positif. On est contents, on a fait des chiffres corrects malgré le contexte actuel. Le public s’adapte petit à petit à mon style musical. Il y a de très légères frustrations par rapport à des collaborations que je n’ai pas eu le temps de faire. La plus grosse frustration reste le fait de ne pas pouvoir tourner pour défendre l’album. // This is very positive. We are happy, we made correct figures despite the current context. Tayc : L’inspiration est évidente même si nous n’y avons pas forcément pensé en créant le morceau. En invitant Chris, tu t’adaptes forcément à sa « sauce MJ » (rires). J’ai également grandi avec Michael donc la prod + Chris + mes inspirations, ça donne ça ! // The inspiration is obvious even if we didn’t necessarily think of it when we created the song. By inviting Chris, you’re necessarily adapting to her « MJ sauce » (laughs). I also grew up with Michael so the production + Chris + my inspirations, that’s what it’s all about !
OFIVE : De plus en plus de rappeurs se mettent à chanter sur des prods parfois similaires aux tiennes. Pour toi, où se situe la frontière entre un chanteur de R&B et un rappeur qui chante ? // More and more rappers are starting to sing on instrumentals sometimes similar to yours. Tayc : Au niveau de la qualité, de la technique vocale. Un chanteur va davantage pousser sa voix. Egalement dans le choix des mots. Aujourd’hui, c’est vrai qu’il y a très peu de distance entre les chanteurs R&B et les rappeurs qui chantent. Grâce aux logiciels, tu peux très bien proposer quelque chose de chanté sans même savoir chanter. Il faut être du métier pour bien reconnaître les styles de voix, celles autotunées ou non par exemple. // In terms of quality and vocal technique. A singer will push his voice more. Tayc : Il m’arrive d’écouter des morceaux et de me dire « j’aurais plié cette prod ». Par exemple, quand j’étais au Cameroun, j’écoutais beaucoup le morceau de WizKid avec Terri. // I sometimes listen to songs and say to myself « I would have murdered this instrumental ». OFIVE : As-tu des secrets pour préserver ta voix ? // Do you have any secrets to preserve your voice ?
Tayc : Beaucoup de studio pour muscler la voix, ne pas trop crier au quotidien, surtout avant les concerts. // A lot of studio to strengthen the voice, do not shout too much every day, especially before the concerts.
OFIVE : Si tu pouvais faire une tournée commune avec deux autres chanteurs R&B ? // If you could do a joint tour with two other R&B singers ?
Tayc : Monsieur Nov et Usher.
OFIVE : Les personnes qui se moquent de tes paroles ou de ton acting dans les clips ne se prennent-elles pas un peu trop au sérieux ? // Don’t people who make fun of your words or your acting in the music videos take themselves a bit too seriously ?
Tayc : A part certains tweets ou commentaires, je ne ressens pas vraiment les critiques négatives sur mes textes. Tôt ou tard, les gens se reconnaissent dans mes paroles, même si elles paraissent trash, les gens vont dire « ok, mais c’est pas faux ce qu’il raconte. » Tout est plus beau en musique. Une phrase dite n’est pas la même une fois chantée. // Apart from some tweets or comments, I don’t really feel the negative criticism on my texts. Sooner or later, people will recognize themselves in my lyrics, even if they sound trashy, people will say « ok, but it’s not wrong what he’s saying. » Everything is more beautiful in music. OFIVE : Un clip chorégraphié par Usher ou Chris Brown ? // A video clip choreographed by Usher or Chris Brown ?
Tayc : Usher, il sait se mettre en valeur en tant que chanteur qui danse. Chris Brown se fond trop parmi ses danseurs quand Usher sait rappeler qu’il est la star, avec une certaine nonchalance dans ses mouvements. Il fait la même chorégraphie que les 5 mecs derrière et même s’ils sont tous habillés pareil, tu sais direct où est Usher. Je trouve Usher plus charismatique. // Usher, he knows how to put himself forward as a singer who dances. Chris Brown blends in too much among his dancers when Usher knows how to recall that he is the star, with a certain nonchalance in his movements. He does the same choreography as the five guys behind and even though they are all dressed the same, you know where Usher is. I find Usher more charismatic.
OFIVE : Un souvenir de fan(s) qui t’a marqué ? // A souvenir of fan(s) that marked you ?
Tayc : Je donnais un showcase (même pas un concert) à Lyon. Deux fans sont venues exprès depuis Paris. De 3h à 10h du matin, elles sont restées devant notre hôtel. Pendant tout ce temps je dormais alors qu’elles étaient à la réception. Les standardistes m’ont alerté, j’étais un peu sceptique avant de descendre mais a priori, ces deux jeunes filles avaient l’air gentilles. Effectivement, elles avaient apporté des survêtements Nike en cadeau pour toute mon équipe (7 au total), des éditions limitées à 300€ la pièce. Elles ont déjeuné avec nous par la suite et je les recroise sur absolument toutes mes dates. // I was giving a showcase (not even a concert) in Lyon. Two fans came on purpose from Paris. From 3am to 10am, they stayed in front of our hotel. During all this time I slept while they were at the lobby. The receptionists alerted me, I was a little skeptical before going downstairs but a priori, these two young girls seemed nice. Indeed, they had brought Nike tracksuits as a gift for my whole team (7 in total), limited editions at 300€ each. They had lunch with us afterwards and I saw them on absolutely all my dates.
OFIVE : Si la fin du monde est annoncée pour demain, que manges-tu ce soir ? // If the end of the world is announced for tomorrow, what are you eating tonight ?
Tayc : Un bon Ndolé avec des bobolo. // A good Ndolé with bobolo.
OFIVE : Ton prochain voyage ? // Your next trip ?
Tayc : Le Ghana, pour bosser, faire du son. On prépare déjà la suite. On a prévu de se connecter avec WizKid et Burna Boy. // Ghana, to work, to make music. We are already preparing the next step. We plan to connect with WizKid and Burna Boy.
OFIVE : Quel clip as-tu préféré faire ? // Which music video did you prefer to make ?
Tayc : « Aloviou », c’était bien évidemment pas un kiff personnel, mais c’était très beau à faire. L’actrice était directement concernée par le texte et le scénario du clip. Elle a beaucoup pleuré pendant la préparation de la vidéo car elle a été victime de cela durant 5 ans, il a fallu la laisser récupérer à plusieurs reprises durant le tournage. Le cri qu’elle pousse dans le clip a glacé le sang de toute l’équipe, c’était authentique. J’ai beaucoup appris de ça. // « Aloviou » was obviously not a personal pleasure, but it was very nice to do. The actress was directly concerned by the text and the script of the video. She cried a lot during the preparation of the video because she was a victim of that for 5 years, we had to let her recover several times during the shooting. The scream she makes in the clip froze the blood of the whole team, it was authentic. I learned a lot from it.
OFIVE : Dans quel état d’esprit es-tu avec l’annulation des concerts et festivals ? // What state of mind are you in with the cancellation of concerts and festivals ?
Tayc : Je suis très attristé, ça joue beaucoup sur mon moral. C’est très compliqué, on est dans le fictif, le non palpable. On ne peut qu’espérer. On imagine des concepts qui seront sûrement annulés, c’est chiant. Même novembre 2021 j’y crois pas. // I am very saddened, it plays a lot on my mind. It’s very complicated, we’re in the fictitious, the non palpable. We can only hope. We imagine concepts that will surely be cancelled, it’s boring. Even November 2021 I don’t believe it.
OFIVE : Tu voulais ressembler à qui quand tu étais petit ? // Who did you want to look like when you were little ?
Tayc : J’ai jamais vraiment eu de modèle. Je voulais juste compter parmi les Usher, les Chris Brown. Je rêvais d’être un petit des Etats-Unis. J’adorais les films américains, le basket. Quand je vivais dans le Delaware avec mes tantes, on écoutait que du Usher. // I never really had a model. I just wanted to be one of the Ushers, the Chris Browns. I dreamed of being a kid from the United States. I loved American movies, basketball. When I lived in Delaware with my aunts, we only listened to Usher.
OFIVE : Aimerais-tu profiter de ta notoriété grandissante pour t’investir dans une association caritative ? // Would you like to take advantage of your growing notoriety to invest in a charity ?
Tayc : Bien sûr. Je m’imagine mal dire non si je peux faire en sorte que d’autres personnes vivent mieux grâce à moi. J’ai que 24 ans, j’attends de grandir encore pour ne rien faire à la légère. J’étais au Cameroun, j’ai pris connaissance de ce qui se passe chez moi, sur le terrain. Beaucoup de personnes disent vouloir aider leur pays sans même y aller. Je n’ai pas envie d’être inutile, de faire les choses vite sans personnes de confiance autour. // Of course. I can’t imagine saying no if I can make other people live better because of me. I’m only 24 years old, I’m waiting to grow up again so I don’t do anything lightly. I was in Cameroon, I learned about what is happening at home, in the field. Many people say they want to help their country without even going there. I don’t want to be useless, to do things quickly without trustworthy people around.
